The Nest Thermostat learns your routines, so it can know when you need your heating to warm up to a comfortable temperature, and when to conserve energy to save you money on your heating bills. It does this by learning patterns and combining this with Geo location data. The thermostat will know when you are not at home, and turn the heating down to conserve energy.
