The Pre-Winter Home Energy Upgrade Checklist (South Wales)

Most energy upgrades fail for one simple reason: the home wasn’t prepared. Before you spend money on a new boiler, a heat pump, or solar, it’s worth doing a few practical checks that make the outcome more predictable.

This checklist is written for typical homes across South Wales and the South West especially 19301990s properties with older boilers and EPC ratings around DF. If you’re off-gas-grid (oil/LPG), it’s also a good prep list for a heat pump survey.

1) Get your EPC (or check if it’s still valid)

An EPC isn’t just paperwork it’s a quick way to understand how your home is likely to behave. It also matters for funding routes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

2) Do the “comfort” check (your home’s weak spots)

Walk through your home and note:

  • Rooms that never feel warm, even with heating on
  • Draughts around doors, windows, and loft hatches
  • Condensation on bedroom windows in the morning
  • Musty smells or black mould spots around window reveals

These clues usually point to heat loss and ventilation issues and fixing them improves any heating system you install afterwards.

3) Insulation first (because it makes everything else work)

If you’re doing one upgrade before winter, insulation is often the best one. It reduces heat loss, improves comfort, and lowers bills regardless of whether you keep a boiler or move to a heat pump.

Priority checks

  • Loft insulation: depth, coverage, and whether it’s been disturbed/compacted
  • Cavity walls: whether you have a cavity (and whether it’s suitable to insulate)
  • Draught-proofing: doors, loft hatch, letterbox, unused chimneys

4) Controls and zoning (the cheapest way to stop waste)

A lot of homes are effectively heating the whole house, all the time even when rooms aren’t being used. Smart controls and sensible zoning can reduce waste quickly.

  • Do you have a programmable thermostat?
  • Do most radiators have TRVs?
  • Are you heating rooms you rarely use?

5) Heating system reality check (boiler, heat pump, or hybrid)

If your boiler is over 10 years old, unreliable, or struggling to heat the home, it’s worth reviewing your options. The key is to choose the right system for the home not the other way around.

A practical rule

If the home is draughty or poorly insulated, fix that first. Then your heating upgrade can be smaller, cheaper to run, and more comfortable.

6) If you’re considering solar: check your usage pattern

Solar works best when it matches how you use electricity. If you’re out all day and use most power in the evening, battery storage often makes the difference.

  • Home in the day: solar-only can work well
  • Evening-heavy: solar + battery is usually worth exploring
  • EV owner: solar + battery + tariff planning can be a serious advantage
